NHL Matchup Notes (2/28)

Good Wednesday morning everyone! Tonight, we have a 5 game slate with some pretty good matchups and this article is just my early morning, first look matchup notes for the 5 game slate matchup by matchup. These are just first initial notes I got by breaking down the matchups, obviously notes are subject to change as more news comes out closer to lock. I will still have my article this afternoon before lock that breaks down my plays of the day. Now let’s get into breaking down the 5 game slate matchups.

NYI@MON- The Canadiens are coming off back to back shootout losses and are looking to finally get back into the win column in a home ice matchup against the Islanders. Montreal has been pretty bad all season and has lost 8 of their last 9 games, going 1-4-4 in those 9 games. Lindgren showed some promising signs for the Canadiens in his first game since November 21 as he got a shutout but received an OT loss as the Flyers beat the Canadiens in the shootout. With Carey Price sidelined, you can expect to see Lindgren or Niemi in net tonight. Most likely it will be Lindgren after his last performance. Tonight’s game will be the second meeting between the two this season. Their 1st meeting was a pretty good one as the game went into OT and Tavares got the game winner. I like Tavares/Lee/Bailey stack and also like Barzal as well in this matchup.

BUF@TB– Tampa Bay is the obvious favorite in this matchup. The lightning sit at the top of the standings while the Sabres piddle around near the bottom. I like the Stamkos line in this matchup tonight. Sounds like Kucherov will be missing some time with an injury so we will have to keep an eye on some line pair news as the day moves along. Not really looking to play anyone for the Sabres tonight. The Sabres are 2-3-0 in their last 5 while the Lightning are 4-1-0 in their last 5. Two totally different ends of the spectrum for these two teams.

DET@STL– Detroit is 2-2-1 in their last 5 games and the Blues are 0-5-0 in their last 5 as they continue to struggle mightily lately. It seems the blues are waiving the white flag as they traded Stastny to the Jets in exchange for a draft pick. It seems clear that this is what we can come to expect from the St. Louis Blues from now on as they continue to play awful hockey. The Blues lost their 7th straight last night in a major butt whoopin put on by Erik Staal and the rest of the Minnesota Wild as they were beat 8-3. Detroit comes into this matchup tonight on a 2 game win streak and are well rested after not playing since Sunday. Give me all Detroit in this one tonight. I like Larkin line tonight more than the first but I have a feeling all the lines get into the action tonight.

CGY@COL- Both teams are 2-2-1 in their last 5 games but Calgary is coming off a 0-2 loss last night against Dallas and Colorado is coming off a day of rest after beating the Canucks 3-1. I love Colorado in this matchup tonight with the Flames on the second of a back to back. Colorado will probably be the higher owned stack tonight as they are on home ice and play much better there. The Flames beat Colorado in Calgary 5-1 on Saturday but now it’s Colorado’s turn on home ice. Give me some MacKinnon/Rantanen on offense and then Tyson Barrie on defense. Varlamov might be a good play at goalie tonight as well on this 5 game slate. Not much of a fan of any Calgary players tonight unless it’s Giordano/Hamilton.

NYR@VAN– The Rangers enter tonights matchup with a 7 game losing streak looming over them. Vancouver is well rested after a rough stretch of games for them as well. The Rangers are 0-4-1 in their last 5 while the Canucks are 2-2-1 in their last 5. I will take all Vancouver in this home ice matchup tonight due to the fact that the Rangers are playing horrible right now and I honestly don’t see that stopping any time soon. Horvat-Boeser-D. Sedin-Edler are all good plays from the Vancouver Canucks tonight.

Make sure you keep an eye out for my NHL DFS Breakdown later this afternoon before lock, where I break down my plays of the day. Thank you everyone for reading!
