NHL DFS Breakdown (2/28)

Happy Wednesday afternoon everyone! Tonight, we have a medium size 5 game slate and some decent matchups. Lock is at 7:00 PM ET/6:00 PM CT. I will list my top plays, good plays, and value plays for tonight’s games and if you want further details on plays then you need to be in our slack chat! Here are the 5 matchups tonight and their start times (Central Time):

Got a few favorable matchups tonight in this list as some of these teams are struggling to find the win column recently and others are on their second game of a back to back. My favorite matchups are the Sabres@Lightning and Islanders@Canadiens. At the end of the article, I will put down my favorite line stacks for the night. Now let’s move into the plays of the day!

Top Center Plays:

Nathan McKinnon vs Calgary Flames ($8300 FD/$7800 DK)

MacKinnon, in my opinion, will be the highest owned center tonight on this 5 game slate and rightfully so. He has been playing so good this season and has two 45+ FD point games in his last 4 games. I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets over 20 FD points tonight on home ice against the Calgary Flames.

Steven Stamkos vs Buffalo Sabres ($8800 FD/$7500 DK)

Stamkos is one of my favorite centers tonight in this 5 game slate and mainly because I feel that MacKinnon is going to be the chalk center tonight in his matchup against the Flames. I love the first line for the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight against the struggling Sabres.

John Tavares @ Montreal Canadiens ($8200 FD/$7300 DK)

Tavares is one of the top players in the game right now consistently providing good stats throughout the season, but his production has fallen off as of late and hasn’t found the score sheet in 4 games. I look for him to rebound in this possibly high scoring affair tonight against the Canadiens.

Brayden Point vs Buffalo Sabres ($6500 FD/$6700 DK)

I know I have both Stamkos and Point on my top plays tonight and that is because I really like this first line for the Lightning tonight with Kucherov most likely out of the lineup. Point-Stamkos-Killorn looks like such a deadly line and I’m excited to watch it tonight.

Good Center Plays:

Matthew Barzal @ Montreal Canadiens ($6600 FD/$6100 DK)

I really like this Canadiens vs Islanders game tonight because I expect it to be a rather high scoring game. The first line for the Islanders is more intriguing to me but this second line with Barzal and Beauvillier is much cheaper and has the potential to explode offensively any given night.

Bo Horvat vs New York Rangers ($5800 FD/$5800 DK)

Horvat has actually been a pretty consistent fantasy point contributor at center. Him and Boeser seem to connect rather well together and I wouldn’t mind throwing them two into a GPP line tonight against the Rangers.

Sean Monahan @ Colorado Avalanche ($7800 FD/$6500 DK)

I am not really a fan of any Flames players tonight as I expect a really good game from the Avalanche tonight. However, you should never go into a game expecting a shutout from a goalie because the odds of that happening are low. If the Flames do score tonight, I expect Monahan to be a part of it.

Value Center Plays:

Ryan Spooner @ Vancouver Canucks ($4500 FD/$3700 DK)

Spooner had a heck of a debut for the New York Rangers two nights ago, where he recorded two assists and got 22 FD points. I expect the Canucks to get the win in this one tonight but Spooner very well could find the score sheet tonight.

Charles Hudon vs New York Islanders ($4700 FD/$3800 DK)

The Canadiens struggle to score but that opportunity to score expands tonight in their matchup against the Islanders, who give up the most shots against per game and also have one of the worst defenses in the league right now. Hudon has a goal and 3 assists in his last 5 games for Montreal. Decent Value play tonight.

Top Winger Plays:

Mikko Rantanen vs Calgary Flames ($6700 FD/$6300 DK)

Rantanen is coming off a very good performance against the Vancouver Canucks, where he recorded 22.1 FD points. His minutes fluctuate on a nightly basis but you can expect anywhere from 18-22 minutes for him tonight against the Flames. Expecting a really good game out of this Colorado 1st line tonight.

Max Pacioretty vs New York Islanders ($6900 FD/$6200 DK)

Max Pac and the first line for the Canadiens might be overlooked tonight in my opinion. Everyone seems to be taking the Islanders side of this matchup but no so fast here. The Canadiens shoot the puck over 30 times per game and the Islanders give up the most shots against per game. That fits right into the Canadiens hands tonight and I expect this game to be high scoring on both sides.

Alex Killorn vs Buffalo Sabres ($5100 FD/$5300 DK)

Killorn is on the first line tonight with Point and Stamkos against the struggling Buffalo Sabres. I really like this trio tonight and think it will be one of the highest stack performances on the night. Killorn has shown some really good stuff this season and being on a line with Stamkos just pushes his worth through the roof.

Good Winger Plays

Vladimir Tarasenko vs Detroit Red Wings ($7800 FD/$6900 DK)

I am not big on any St. Louis players tonight really because you just cant trust them right now. They are on a 7 game losing streak and have seemed to just waive the surrender flag by trading away stastny for nothing in return. Tarasenko is about the only thing that has been hot for them which is the reason he makes the article, but other than him, I am not a fan of the Blues tonight.

Gabriel Landeskog vs Calgary Flames ($6200 FD/$6100 DK)

Landeskog is one of the DFS players who I have a love hate relationship with. One day he does me good but then the next 2 he hurts me. I personally like Rantanen more than Lande tonight but he is still a good play tonight against the Flames on the 2nd of a back to back.

Brendan Gallagher vs New York Islanders ($6800 FD/$5800 DK)

Gallagher on the 3rd line doesn’t look appealing to most and I get that but the last time these two teams played Brendan had 7 shots on goal. The Islanders allow the most shots against per game and the Canadiens shoot the puck a ton despite not scoring much. Not saying he is a great play but he is certainly a decent play tonight.

Value Winger Plays:

Artturi Lehkonen vs New York Islanders ($4300 FD/$3900 DK)

Lehkonen is on the first line with Max Pac for the Canadiens tonight. Being paired with Max automatically puts him in a good spot for his price in a matchup against the Islanders, who gave up the most goals per game at one point this season.

Anthony Beauvillier @ Montreal Canadiens ($4600 FD/$4700 DK)

Despite 2 games ago when Beauvillier recorded 0 fantasy points, he has been a consistent fantasy point contributor. He seems to average around 8 just on a regular day and then some games sees that spike up to 15-20 when him and Barzal are having good connections. I like his price tonight for his matchup against the Canadiens.

Top Defenseman Plays:

Tyson Barrie vs Calgary Flames ($7200 FD/$7300)

I like Barrie a lot tonight against the Flames on a second of a back to back. He has been playing very well in the month of February, consistently finding the score sheet and just putting the puck on net in general. He is also averaging over 25 minutes of ice time recently which is a very good amount.

Victor Hedman vs Buffalo Sabres ($7200 FD/$6800 DK)

Hedman is the most expensive defenseman on this slate tonight and rightfully so. He continues to show that he is one of the best d man in the league by finding the score sheet on a nightly basis. I like him a lot tonight against a struggling Buffalo Sabres team, who continues to find ways to bite themselves in the rear.

Jeff Petry vs New York Islanders ($5400 FD/$5700 DK)

Petry is almost a must play at defenseman tonight in my book. He is averaging over 15 FD points in his last 7 games and plays well over 20 minutes night in and night out. Great opportunity to find the score sheet again tonight against the Islanders, who are known to let in quite a few, despite scoring a lot.

Good Defenseman Plays:

Alexander Edler @ New York Rangers ($5300 FD/$5600 DK)

Edler has assists in his last 10 games for the Canucks and that’s even with the Canucks playing some horrible hockey the second half of this season. I like the Canucks tonight even though it seems to me that more people are leaning towards the Rangers tonight. Vegas has the Canucks as slight favorites so I will take them in this matchup.

Value Defenseman Plays:

John Gilmour @ Vancouver Canucks ($3700 FD/$3500 DK)

Gilmour has seen his minutes rise consistently over his last 10 games for the Rangers. He is now getting over 20 minutes a game and is on the first defenseman pair as well. He doesn’t get involved in much offensive scoring but he provides consistent value through shots on goal and blocked shots. Very cheap defenseman option tonight.

Trevor Daley @ St. Louis Blues ($3700 FD/$3400 DK)

Daley is a defenseman who is being over looked lately despite having really good numbers. He is averaging 22 minutes of ice time and has double digit FD points in three of his last 4 with 2 of them bein 19+. He is going into a great matchup tonight against the Blues, who have lost 7 games in a row.

Top Goalie Plays:

Andrei Vasilevskiy vs Buffalo Sabres ($9300 FD/8500 DK)

Vasilevskiy is the most expensive goalie on the 5 game slate tonight and its obviously because the Lightning are the best in the league and are going up against the Buffalo Sabres. The Sabres traded Kane away and are still without Jack Eichel, so there depth is in question tonight and it seems like they to are giving up on this season. Personally, I don’t like paying up for goalies, especially when they are this high priced, but if you do then Vasi is your go-to tonight.

Semyon Varlamov vs Calgary Flames ($7900 FD/$8000 DK)

Varlamov didn’t have a good game against the Flames in Calgary 4 nights ago but playing at home is much different for the Avalanche. They are much better at home and are catching the Flames on a second night of a b2b after they got beat 0-2 by the Stars in Dallas. I expect a good game tonight from Varmy after coming off a good win against the Canucks two nights ago.

Good Goalie Plays:

Jimmy Howard @ St. Louis Blues ($7700 FD/$7100 DK)

Howard has had two great back to back starting performances for the Detroit Red Wings. He is 2-0 with 64 saves and 3 goals against in his last 2. Howard didn’t fare well against the Blues in December as he was pulled from the game after giving up 4 goals early. I expect that to be the opposite here tonight against the Blues who are a worse off team now than they were back then as they were fighting for playoffs. The Blues are on a 7 game losing streak and are being outscored 10 to 29 in that span..Good matchup makes howard a good play tonight.

Value Goalie Plays:

Jacob Markstrom vs New York Rangers ($7700 FD/$7800 DK)

I like Markstrom tonight against the Rangers because they just look like a team who is waiving the white flag and giving up on the season. They are 2-7-1 in their last 10 games and are being outscored 21-39 in that span. Markstrom isn’t having a spectacular season by any means but he has had some really good games against less than mediocre squads.
