NHL DFS Breakdown (2/16)

Hello everyone, I’m excited to get back into the NHL DFS win column tonight after a rough night yesterday. Tonight, we have a 4 game slate and some decent matchups. Lock is at 7:00 PM ET/6:00 PM CT. I will list my top plays, good plays, and value plays for tonight’s games and if you want further details on plays then you need to be in our slack chat! Here are the 4 matchups tonight and their start times (Eastern Time):

PHI @ CLS 7:00pm
NYI @ CAR 7:30pm
COL @ WPG 8:00pm
STL @ DAL 8:30pm

Small slate but I do like our choices tonight. My favorite matchups tonight are NYI@CAR and STL@DAL. At the end of the article, I will put down my favorite line stacks for the night. Now let’s move into the plays of the day!

Top Center Plays:

Mark Scheifele vs Colorado Avalanche ($8400 FD/$7100 DK)

Scheifele has 3 games under his belt since returning from injury. He is coming off a game where he scored 40 FD points and got 2 goals. He is one of my favorite plays tonight against the Avalanche.

Sebastian Aho vs New York Islanders ($7000 FD/$6600 DK)

Aho seems to be one of those guys who you cant go wrong with playing lately. It seems as if he is finding the score sheet on a nightly basis right now. I expect him to find the score sheet multiple times tonight against the Islanders, who give up the most goals per game in the league.

Matthew Barzal @ Carolina Hurricanes ($6400 FD/$6300 DK)

Barzal has been playing some of his best hockey this season for the Islanders. I could see this game against the Hurricanes being a high scoring affair as both are more offensive minded teams. Great matchup tonight for him to continue his scoring.

Tyler Seguin vs St. Louis Blues ($8400 FD/$7400 DK)

I know a lot of you that I talk with daily are always concerned about playing Seguin because it seems like anytime you play him, he doesn’t do squat. I really expect the first line with Seguin, Radulov, and Benn to find the score sheet multiple times tonight. If you are only looking to play one star though, I recommend it being Radulov.

Good Center Plays:

Pierre-Luc Dubois vs Philadelphia Flyers ($6000 FD/$5100 DK)

I have been on Dubois the last 2 or so articles and rightfully so he has scored both nights. The Blue Jackets have 158 shots on goal in their last three games and I expect them to come out firing again tonight against the Flyers.

Jordan Staal vs New York Islanders ($5500 FD/$5400 DK)

I really like the Hurricanes on home ice tonight against the Islanders. Both teams are on the 2nd of a back to back so I’m sure there will be some signs of exhaustion on both sides but I still expect the Canes to prevail with the victory tonight.

Value Center Plays:

Alexander Kerfoot @ Winnipeg Jets ($4700 FD/$4200 DK)

Kerfoot still finds himself on the first line for the Avalanche while MacKinnon is out with his injury. I don’t expect the Avalanche to find the score sheet much tonight but if they do, Kerfoot will more than likely be a part of it.

Andrew Copp vs Colorado Avalanche ($3600 FD/$3500 DK)

Copp is more of a gpp only type center tonight but he is on the second line for the Jets tonight along with Ehlers and Little. I like this line a lot tonight too as they are so much cheaper than the first Jets line with Wheeler and Laine.

Top Winger Plays:

Vladimir Tarasenko @ Dallas Stars ($8100 FD/$6800 DK)

You know me, I’m a Dallas Stars fan and I don’t like playing people against them but I am not blind to the fact that the Stars like to have some bad games and when they have bad games they have REALLY bad games. I don’t expect that to be the case tonight against the Blues, so Tarasenko isn’t one of my favorites tonight at his price but he is still a vaiable option tonight.

Blake Wheeler vs Colorado Avalanche ($7300 FD/$6900 DK)

Wheeler played great at center while Scheifele was injured and I expect him to continue playing well now with him back at the Winger position on a line with Scheifele. Great plays tonight against the Avalanche who aren’t near as good on the road as they are at home.

Alexander Radulov vs St. Louis Blues ($6700 FD/$6700 DK)

The Stars are fighting for 3rd place tonight and will achieve that with a win against the Blues tonight. I like him the most on the Dallas Stars because he has been playing the best and goes into every game with 100% effort.

Jamie Benn vs St. Louis Blues ($7900 FD/$7000 DK)

The line of Benn, Seguin and Alexander Radulov is incredibly fun to watch and everyone knows that at any time this line could break out with a huge performance. What better time to do it than tonight after 4 days of rest.

Good Winger Plays:

Kyle Connor vs Colorado Avalanche ($5100 FD/$5100 DK)

Connor has been playing really well this season for the Jets and he is only a rookie. I like the Winnipeg Jets tonight a lot in this matchup against the Avalanche and he should find the score sheet at least once tonight.

Jeff Skinner vs New York Islanders ($6500 FD/$6200 DK)

Skinner has 5 goals for the Hurricanes in his last 10 games and has been playing really well along with the rest of his line mates. He isn’t my favorite winger play by any means but I still like him tonight against the Islanders.

Cam Atkinson vs Philadelphia Flyers ($6400 FD/$5800 DK)

The Blue Jackets have been firing the puck at a crazy rate with 158 shots in their last 3 games. He alone has 43 shots in his last 10 games for the Jackets and I expect him to keep firing the puck at the net any chance he gets tonight.

Artemi Panarin vs Philadelphia Flyers ($7100 FD/$6100 DK)

Panarin has 3 goals and 5 assists in his last 10 games for the Blue Jackets. As I said above under Atkinson, the Blue Jackets have been firing the puck at a crazy rate with 158 shots in their last 3 games. That is unbelievable in todays NHL. I like the Dubois-Panarin-Atkinson stack.

Value Winger Plays:

Anthony Beauvillier @ Carolina Huricanes ($4400 FD/$4800 DK)

Beauvillier is on the second line with Barzal, who has been playing exceptionally well for the Islanders this season. I like the 2nd line tonight with Beau and Barzal more than I do the expensive line 1 with Tavares-Lee-Bailey.

Top Defenseman Plays:

Justin Faulk vs New York Islanders ($5400 FD/$5400 DK)

Faulk is coming off a game in which he scored a hat trick against the Los Angeles Kings Tuesday night. I like the Hurricanes in this matchup tonight more than I do the Islanders just because I feel like the Hurricanes have the better goal tending. Great play tonight across both sites.

John Klingberg vs St. Louis Blues ($6400 FD/$5700 DK)

Klingberg is one of my favorite defenseman in the league at this point of the season because he consistently gets involved in the offensive side of things while also playing a great defensive game as well.

Dustin Byfuglien vs Colorado Avalanche ($5300 FD/$5300 DK)

Byfuglien is one of the most consistent defenseman in the league right now as he has 1 goal and 6 assists in his last 10 games while also adding on 17 blocked shots and 22 Shots on goal. Great play tonight against the Avalanche who are without MacKinnon.

Good Defenseman Plays:

Nick Leddy @ Carolina Hurricanes ($5600 FD/$4900 DK)

Leddy has a goal in the last 2 games for the Islanders while also adding on 6 shots on goal and 2 blocked shots to his total. Carolina is playing much better right now but he should rack up the blocked shots tonight.

Seth Jones vs Philadelphia Flyers ($5800 FD/$5800 DK)

Jones and the Blue Jackets have been shooting the puck like crazy lately and he has 41 shots in his last 10 games while also adding on 6 assists in that span. Good defenseman play tonight against the Flyers.

Value Defenseman Plays:

Vince Dunn @ Dallas Stars ($3700 FD/$3200 DK)

Dunn is a risky defenseman play tonight. He has a huge upside but there is also the chance that he doesn’t do anything at all. The reason I like Dunn is because he gets his body in front of shots and racks up the block totals which is a big fantasy point stuffer for defenseman.

Noah Hanifin vs New York Islanders ($3800 FD/$3900 DK)

Hanifin has 5 assists in his last 10 games and if he finds the score sheet just one time tonight he automatically meets value at his cheap price on both platforms. Great value play tonight against the Islanders.

Top Goalie Plays:

Connor Hellebuyck vs Colorado Avalanche ($8100 FD/$8300 DK)

Hellebuyck is my top project fantasy points goalie tonight in his matchup against the Avalanche, who are still without Nathan MacKinnon. I’m expecting 3.1 times value for the Connor tonight. Projection around 25.2 FD points.

Good Goalie Plays:

Sergei Bobrovsky vs Philadelphia Flyers ($8700 FD/$7900 DK)

Bobrovsky has allowed just one goal in each of his previous two outings and will look to continue carrying that momentum forward. Great matchup tonight against the Flyers who just cant seem to put together a consistent winning streak. The Blue Jackets are playing well in front of him as well making him even more valuable as he isn’t having to carry the whole load.

Ben Bishop vs St. Louis Blues ($8800 FD/$8100 DK)

Bishop gave up four goals on 20 shots to the Canucks in his last outing, taking a loss for the first time in three February starts. He has looked stellar since the All Star break except for that performance against the Canucks. I look for him to rebound tonight against the Blues.

Value Goalie Plays:

Cam Ward (GPP only) vs New York Islanders ($7700 FD/$8000 DK)

Ward has managed a 17-7-3 record, .912 save percentage and 2.60 GAA for the season. He is strictly a GPP only play tonight against the Islanders who give up a lot of goals but also score a lot of goals per game.
