NHL DFS Breakdown (1/24)

Welcome to the January 24th NHL Breakdown! We have a very small 2 game slate on hand tonight with lock at 8:00 PM ET/7:00 PM CT. In this article, I will detail my top plays, good plays, and value plays. I will include both Draftkings and FanDuel pricing for your convenience. Here are the 2 matchups tonight and their start times (Eastern Time):

TOR @ CHI 8:00pm
LA @ CGY 10:00pm

Tonight is a risky slate but we are still going to play it. If you decide to play NHL DFS tonight, it is recommended that you play light because of the small slate. All it takes is 1 player going off that you don’t have and it’s over, so keep that in mind when selecting your contests. The article will be smaller today because otherwise I would be writing down every player from the 2 games. Now let’s take a look at the plays of the day!

Top Center Play:

Auston Matthews @ Chicago Blackhawks ($7800 FD/$7400 DK)

Matthews has 6 goals in his last 10 games and looked phenomenal in his last game against the Avalanche two nights ago, scoring a goal and having another one that got waived off for goalie interference. He was flying all over the ice and if he plays like that again tonight, he will destroy the Blackhawks single handedly.

Good Center Plays:

Sean Monahan vs Los Angeles Kings ($7500 FD/$6500 DK)

Monahan has played great in his last 10 games with Gaudreau, managing 4 goals, 6 assists, and 20 shots on goal. Great matchup tonight against the Kings and I expect the 1st line to see the score sheet multiple times.

Jonathan Toews vs Toronto Maple Leafs ($7100 FD/$6200 DK)

I think Toews will be one of the lower owned centers that will find the score sheet tonight maybe even more than once. He has played great in his last 10 games with 5 goals, 4 assists, and 34 Shots on goal.

Value Center:

Tyler Bozak @ Chicago Blackhawks ($4800 FD/$5500 DK)

Bozak is averaging 2.3 DK points in his last 10 games and has shown some promising things with the Maple Leafs and he could find the goal sheet tonight in what could be a relatively high scoring game.

Top Winger Plays:

Johnny Gaudreau vs Los Angeles Kings ($8100 FD/$7300 DK)

Gaudreau has been a large part of the recent Flames success, managing 2 goals and 12 assists in his last 10 games. Against a struggling Kings team and their backup goalie, he is a great play tonight.

Patrick Kane vs Toronto Maple Leafs ($8500 FD/$7500 DK)

Kane has 48 points through 46 games this season and 10 points in his last 10 games while also adding on 35 Shots on goal. Great matchup tonight on home ice against the Leafs.

Good Winger Play:

James van Riemsdyk @ Chicago Blackhawks ($7900FD/$7200 DK)

The Maple Leafs have struggled lately and JVR has as well managing just 2 points in his last 10 games. Tonight could be that rebounding night for him against Jeff Glass and the Blackhawks.

Value Winger Plays:

Anthony Duclair vs Toronto Maple Leafs ($4400 FD/$4100 DK)

I really like the odds that Duclair finds the score sheet tonight against the Leafs. I am projecting him at around 9 FD points at bare minimum but he could see higher than that if the first line is clicking for the Blackhawks.

Troy Brouwer vs Los Angeles Kings ($3700 FD/$3300 DK)

Brouwer is one of my favorite value plays at any position tonight against the Kings. He has shown some promising stuff in his last 10 games and what an easier way to get back onto the score sheet going into a matchup against the backup for the struggling LA Kings.

Connor Brown @ Chicago Blackhawks ($3500 FD/$3800 DK)

Brown is one of the risky value plays of the night. He always has the potential to find the score sheet because he is super talented and when he does find the sheet, it is usually a goal.

Top Defensemen Play:

Mark Giordano vs Los Angeles Kings ($5900 FD/$5600 DK)

Giordano has been hot lately for the Flames, managing 2 goals, 5 assists, 16 Blocked shots, and 26 shots on goal. I like him a lot in this 2 game slate against the LA Kings.

Good Defensemen Play:

Duncan Keith vs Toronto Maple Leafs ($5200 FD/$5200 DK)

I am projecting Keith around 12 FD points tonight against the Maple Leafs because he is a tad bit cheaper than your top defenseman but he has a strong upside.

Value Defensemen Plays:

Jake Gardiner @ Chicago Blackhawks ($4100 FD/$4600 DK)

Gardiner has stepped up for the Maple Leafs in the absence of Morgan Rielly, adding 6 assists, 15 blocked shots, and 20 shots on goal.

Connor Carrick @ Chicago Blackhawks ($3500 FD/$3300 DK)

I like value plays on a small slate like this where you can pay up for offensive elites, so this is one of my punt plays at defenseman. His numbers are not great but he has the potential for a good game on a small slate like tonight.

Top Goalie Play:

Mike Smith vs Los Angeles Kings ($8600 FD/$7900 DK)

Smith is my favorite goalie on this slate with a favorable matchup against a struggling Los Angeles Kings team who are 1-7 in their last 8 games and are on the second game of a B2B after losing to the Canucks 6-2 last night. Smith is the most likely goalie to see a shutout tonight.

Good Goalie Play:

Frederik Andersen @ Chicago Blackhawks ($8200 FD/$8100 DK)

Andersen has now let in three goals or more in four of his past five starts. Chicago seems to finally be able to find the shore sheet and this could be a real test for Andersen and a good chance to prove himself.

Value Goalie Play:

Jeff Glass vs Toronto Maple Leafs ($7600 FD/$7200 DK)

Glass  put up a decent performance against the Tampa Bay Lightning offense on Monday, allowing just two goals on 31 shots. I like his odds tonight against the Maple Leafs, who have been on a downhill spiral.

*NOTE* I recommend playing some value plays at defenseman and playing the more expensive offensive elites in this 2 game slate. Also, it is important that you play light and don’t go all in, because it is super risky playing these super small slates.
