NHL DFS Breakdown (1/21)

Hello DFS friends! Tonight, we have a smaller 4 game slate with lock at 7:00 PM ET/6:00 PM CT. In this article, I will detail my top plays, good plays, and value plays. I will include both Draftkings and FanDuel pricing for your convenience. Now let’s take a look at the 4 matchups tonight and their start times (Eastern Time):

VGK @ CAR 6:00pm
VAN @ WPG 8:00pm
SJ @ ANH 9:00pm
NYR @ LA 10:30pm

I’m not a huge fan of this 4 game slate but it’s good enough for me to play it.
With that said, Let’s dive in to the plays of the day!

CENTERS:

Top Center Plays:

Blake Wheeler vs Vancouver Canucks ($7600 FD/$7600 DK)

Wheeler has been on a roll in his last 10 games, scoring 5 goals and 7 assists while adding 9 blocked shots and 32 SOG. The Jets have been on a roll this season and I look for them to continue it tonight against the Canucks, who are on their second of a B2B.

Ryan Getzlaf vs San Jose Sharks ($7500 FD/$6900 DK)

Since coming back from his 16-game absence in December, Getzlaf has been putting up some good numbers for the Ducks. While his goal scoring is way down, he meets his fantasy value with assists where he has 22 over 23 games played.

William Karlsson @ Carolina Hurricanes ($6600 FD/$7200 DK)

Karlsson is averaging 4.2 DK points and 16 FD points over his last 10 games. Against a struggling Scott Darling tonight against the Hurricanes, look for Karlsson and Marchessault to connect for a few.

Good Center Plays:

Anze Kopitar vs New York Rangers ($6700 FD/$6800 DK)

Kopitar and the Kings have not been very good in their last 25 games but tonight is a favorable matchup on home ice against the Rangers who are on their second game of a B2B.

Mika Zibanejad @ Los Angeles Kings ($6500 FD/$6200 DK)

Zibanejad hasn’t been himself this season for the Rangers but he seems to finally be getting back into a grove with the line who has scoring the most for them. I like his odds of getting a PP goal tonight against the Kings.

Logan Couture @ Anaheim Ducks ($6700 FD/$6400 DK)

Couture is one of my favorite centers tonight against the Ducks. He is averaging 3.5 DK and 12 FD points over his last 10 games. I like the matchup and for his price he should exceed value.

Value Centers:

Ryan Kesler vs San Jose Sharks ($5500 FD/$4700 DK)

Kesler is coming off a hot 6 DK point game on Friday while scoring the game winner against the LA Kings. His numbers aren’t all that great since returning this season from injury but his potential at less than 5k price is remarkable.

WINGERS:

Top Winger Plays:

Joe Pavelski @ Anaheim Ducks ($7100 FD/$6300 DK)

Pavelski and the sharks have been on a roll lately and he himself has gotten 8 assists in the last 10 games. His connection with Thornton has been on fire lately making him valuable tonight against the Ducks.

Jonathan Marchessault @ Carolina Hurricanes ($7100 FD/$7400 DK)

Marchessault has been on a serious hot streak with the Golden Knights averaging 17 FD points and 4.3 DK points over his last 10 games while managing 4 goals, 5 assists, and 45 SOG in that span.

Patrik Laine vs Vancouver Canucks ($7600 FD/$7300 DK)

I really like the Jets tonight against the Canucks coming off a game last night where not much went their way. Laine should do well in this contest with a high chance of a goal or two.

Good Winger Plays:

Nikolaj Ehlers vs Vancouver Canucks ($6500FD/$6600 DK)

I also like Winnipeg 2 in this contest against the Canucks with Ehlers and Perreault being on a mini hot streak for the Jets.

Brock Boeser @ Winnipeg Jets ($6500 FD/$6500 DK)

Boeser has been one of the best offensive players for the Canucks this season and he is only 20. His production has fallen off lately but he is the most likely candidate to score against the Jets tonight.

Value Winger Plays:

Jeff Skinner vs Vegas Golden Knights ($5700 FD/$6000 DK)

Skinner is my favorite play tonight for the Hurricanes against the Knights. I’m projecting him at 15 FD points tonight. Golden Knights are one of the best teams in the league but they are much worse on the road than at home so with Carolina getting them on the road.

DEFENSEMEN:

Top Defensemen Plays:

Brent Burns @ Anaheim Ducks ($7300 FD/$7200 DK)

Burns has been putting up remarkable fantasy numbers over his last 10 games. He is averaging 22.3 FD points over his last 5 games and 21 points over his last 10. He’s the most expensive defensemen on the slate tonight but if you have the money left for a defenseman put in burns. You can pair him with a cheap defenseman play to make it work.

Dustin Byfuglien vs Vancouver Canucks ($5200 FD/$5300 DK)

Byfuglien has been the most consistent defenseman for the Jets this season and against the Canucks tonight, he is one of my favorite defenseman plays behind Burns.

Good Defensemen Plays:

Drew Doughty vs Anaheim Ducks ($5600 FD/$5900 DK)

I haven’t really been a fan of too many Los Angeles Kings players lately because they have not been producing but I feel like Doughty is the most likely Kings player to put up decent fantasy numbers behind Kopitar.

Value Defensemen Plays:

Justin Faulk vs Vegas Golden Knights ($4600 FD/$4500 DK)

Faulk is a good defenseman to pair with Burns tonight because he has been on a great hot streak for the hurricanes where he is averaging 17.84 FD points over his last 5 games. He also has 31 SOG for the Canes in their last 10 and that many shots for a defenseman is pretty good.

GOALIES:

Top Goalie Play:

Marc-Andre Fleury @ Carolina Hurricanes ($8300 FD/$8400 DK)

Fleury is 7-2-1 in his last 10 starts with a 1.4 GAA. Against a Carolina Hurricanes team that is without Sebastian Aho, I look for Fleury to have a good game tonight with only a couple goals against at most.

Good Goalie Play:

Connor Hellebuyck vs Vancouver Canucks ($8300 FD/$8300 DK)

Hellebuyck is playing again tonight after a 2-1 30 save win yesterday against the Calgary Flames. The Canucks are ranked 26th in goals per game so he should be able to handle the workload tonight even though he played yesterday.

Value Goalie Plays:

Ondrej Pavelec vs Los Angeles Kings ($7600 FD/$7300 DK)

Pavelecs last start was not good at all, allowing 5 goals on 19 shots before being pulled against the Islanders. He is strictly a GPP play tonight against the Kings who have not been able to score much at all lately.
