NHL DFS Breakdown (1/20)

Hey again DFS NHL players! Tonight we have a 9 game main slate with lock at 7:00 PM ET/6:00 PM CT. In this article, I will detail my top plays, good plays, and value plays. I will include both Draftkings and FanDuel pricing for your convenience. Now let’s take a look at the matchups tonight and their start times (Eastern Time):

BOS @ MON 7:00pm
CAR @ DET 7:00pm
TOR @ OTT 7:00pm
ARI @ STL 8:00pm
PIT @ SJ 8:00pm
FLA @ NSH 8:00pm
NYI @ CHI 8:30pm
TB @ MIN 9:00pm
VAN @ EDM 10:00pm

My favorite game of the night is Boston @ Montreal. Boston is on one of the hottest streaks in the NHL and every time they play, Bergeron and Marchand are so low owned it’s remarkable. I also like Chicago at home against the Islanders and the Blues at home against the Coyotes.

Let’s dive in to the plays of the day!

CENTERS:

Top Center Plays:

Patrice Bergeron @ Montreal Canadiens ($7900 FD/$7400 DK)

OH! Do I love me some Patrice Bergeron?! Yes I do! Bergeron has nine goals and five assists through his past eight games and is also currently on pace to have a career-best offensive showing. He has been slept on the last few games and it just makes me wonder what other fantasy hockey players are thinking when they fade him!

Connor McDavid vs Vancouver Canucks ($9000 FD/$7600 DK)

McDavids goal scoring has fallen off in his last 10 game but even without goals he is still averaging 4.3 DK points in that span. I look for him to get back into the goal column tonight against the Canucks.

John Tavares @ Chicago Blackhawks ($8500 FD/$7200 DK)

Tavares is up to 24 goals and 54 points through 45 games this season. This game against the Blackhawks has the potential to be a high scoring game and Tavares should see a goal or an assist tonight.

Good Center Plays:

Paul Stastny vs Arizona Coyotes ($5800 FD/$6400 DK)

Stastny has three goals and five assists through his past six games. Playing alongside  Vladimir Tarasenko has helped Stastny acquire 10 goals and 23 helpers through 47 games for the season. His price is finally going up as he continues to see time on that first power play line and with a great matchup against the Yotes tonight, I like him a lot!

Value Centers:

Jordan Staal @ Detroit Red Wings ($5500 FD/$4700 DK)

Staal has been producing a little bit more offense for the Hurricanes in the last 10 games with 3 goals and 4 assists over that span with 25 SOG. I’m not too high on Staal without Aho but I do think if they get a PP chance he can get on the score sheet.

Sam Gagner @ Edmonton Oilers ($4500 FD/$4200 DK)

Gagner finds himself on the top line going into the game against an Edmonton Oilers team who has struggled to find consistent goaltending. The upside Gagner is the Power Play where he does most of his damage. He is very cheap with a high potential.

WINGERS:

Top Winger Plays:

Brad Marchand @ Montreal Canadiens ($8800 FD/$8100 DK)

Is it really any surprise Marchand makes my top winger list? I have been rolling with Marchand the Bruins since they started this insane hot streak. He is averaging 5.1 DK points over his last 10 games with some serious offensive explosion in his last 15. Must play tonight against the Canadiens!

Patrick Kane vs New York Islanders ($8400 FD/$7400 DK)

Kane has been a little inconsistent lately but he always has that massive upside and with Marchand and Tarasenko likely eating up the chalk, he could be relatively low owned. Averaging 4.1 DK points in his last 10 games.

Vladimir Tarasenko vs Arizona Coyotes ($8300 FD/$7600 DK)

Tarasenko has 5 goals and 4 assists while adding 34 Shots on goal in his last 10 games. Against the worst team in the NHL, he is an absolute top play tonight!

Good Winger Plays:

David Pastrnak @ Montreal Canadiens ($7400FD/$6600 DK)

As I said on Marchand, I am a big fan of this Bruins hot streak. Against a struggling Montreal team, there should be no reason the Bruins don’t put up some serious numbers on them. Pastrnak started the season off slow but over the bruins streak, he has really produced some good fantasy numbers.

Brock Boeser @ Edmonton Oilers ($5800 FD/$5400 DK)

Boeser started the year off with a massive bang but his production has fallen since then. He ha started to pick it up in his last 10 games and even with a few bad performances, he is averaging 3.8 DK points in that span.

Craig Smith vs Florida Panthers ($4600 FD/$5900 DK)

When Smith has the puck on the offensive zone, he is shooting it. He has 43 SOG in his last 10 games and I look for him to continue to shoot the puck a lot tonight and even put one in the night against the Panthers.

Value Winger Plays:

Ryan Spooner @ Montreal Canadiens ($4800 FD/$4400 DK)

The Bruins have been the hottest team in the NHL over their last 15 games and spooner has been a huge part of their success along with Bergeron and Marchand. He has 6 goals and 3 assists in their last 10 games, averaging 3.9 DK in that span.

Andreas Athanasiou vs Carolina Hurricanes ($4900 FD/$5600 DK)

Andreas has been on a super hot streak after a slow start to the season. 5 goals and 4 assists over his last 10 games with 35 SOG, averaging 4.2 DK points in that span. I like him a lot against the Hurricanes tonight on home ice.

DEFENSEMEN:

Top Defensemen Plays:

Roman Josi vs Florida Panthers ($5800 FD/$6700 DK)

Josi has collected four points in his last four games and is now up to eight goals and 19 assists in 41 games on the season. I highly recommend having him in at least one of your lineups tonight against the Coyotes.

Colton Parayko vs Arizona Coyotes ($5900 FD/$6600 DK)

Parayko makes a fantasy living off his blocked shots and shots on goal. Over his last 10 games, he has 24 SOG and 30 Blocked shots. Averaging 3.4 DK points over the last 10 is about as good as it can get for a defenseman.

Good Defensemen Plays:

Alexander Edler vs Edmonton Oilers ($4900 FD/$5700 DK)

Edler is entering the game against the Oilers with points in 4 straight games and is providing a great number of fantasy points with his blocked shots and shots on goal. He is averaging 4.7 DK/15.9 FD Points over his last 10 games with 31 blocks and 36 shots on goal in that span.

Value Defensemen Plays:

Jordan Oesterle vs New York Islanders ($4100 FD/$5000 DK)

I like Oesterle tonight against the Islanders for his price. Oesterle’s offensive upside makes him worth a play for owners looking for a value play at the defenseman position.

Jakob Chychrun @ St. Louis Blues ($4000 FD/$4400 DK)

Chychrun is returning to the Coyotes lineup tonight against the blues and he will slide right back into the second line and first Power Play line. He is averaging 3.7 DK points over his last 10 games even with missing the last one due to an illness.

GOALIES:

Top Goalie Play:

Carter Hutton vs Arizona Coyotes ($8700 FD/$8300 DK)

The blues are continuing to ride with Hutton who has won 2 straight games while stopping 50 of 52 shots and is 10-3-1 with a .943 Save percentage on the season. Against a 30th ranked offense, Hutton is my #1 goalie tonight.

Good Goalie Play:

Pekka Rinne vs Florida Panthers ($8500 FD/$8200 DK)

Rinne has now won three straight games and is 22-8-3 on the season with a .923 Save Percentage. I love goalies at home and against a Panthers team playing the 2nd of a back to back, Rinne is strong play tonight!

Value Goalie Plays:

Anton Forsberg vs New York Islanders ($7500 FD/$7500 DK)

Forsberg has played well as of late compiling a 2-1-0 record with an outstanding 1.68 GAA and .943 save percentage in his last three games. The Islanders are a very powerful offensive team but Forsberg could be a good punt goalie play tonight.
